301 FOODS I (FOOD AND NUTRITION)

½ CR.              2 LEVELS                   Jr./Sr.

An instructional program that prepares the students to understand the basic principles of nutrition; the relationship of nutrition to health and wellness; how science and technology have led to improved nutrition; the impact of the nutrients on your body and health; and meal management to meet individual and family food needs and patterns of living. Teaching methods will likely include lecture, some labs, and guest speakers.

307 FOODS II (FOOD SCIENCE)

Prerequisite: Foods 1 (Food and Nutrition)

½ CR.              1 LEVEL                     Jr./Sr.

This course will continue to work on understanding and promoting nutritional knowledge. The students will also learn basic skills necessary to succeed in their own kitchens. The class will teach kitchen safety, proper measuring techniques, basic cooking methods, food economics and ecology, and making optimal use of the food dollar. Teaching methods will likely include lecture, weekly labs, guest speakers, and field trips. This course is offered during the second semester.

302 UNDERSTANDING FAMILY AND SELF

½ CR.              2 LEVELS                   Jr./Sr.

This semester course studies how we reach our potential through personal growth and development; including the significance of family and its effect on the well-being of individuals and society. The course takes a look at relationships, particularly the dating relationship and the differences between mature love and romantic feelings. This discussion leads into teen pregnancy and the realities of teen parenting. Each student will have an opportunity to participate in the Baby Think It Over program by working with a “computerized baby” to simulate the responsibilities of parenting.

304 CLOTHING I

½ CR.              1 LEVEL                     So./Jr./Sr.

This introductory course teaches the basic skills needed to sew simple projects. Students will learn the following skills: how to operate a sewing machine; how to read a pattern; fabric characteristics and preparation; basic construction techniques; and some hand stitching.

305 CLOTHING II

Prerequisites: Clothing I; Department Approval

½ CR.              1 LEVEL                     Jr./Sr.

In this semester course we continue to build on traditional techniques of clothing construction. Students will work on more challenging projects that could include such skills as: zipper applications, making button holes, gathering and pleating, setting in sleeves, or attaching collars depending on their projects.

306 CLOTHING III (Fashion Design)

Prerequisites: Clothing II; Department Approval

½ CR.              1 LEVEL                     Jr./Sr.

In this project based course the students have a unique opportunity to explore design and construction at their level of interest, creativity, and ability. Students will work collaboratively with the teacher to select their projects. Clothing techniques and skills will be taught based on the projects chosen.
