Students will write about, talk about, and make art, both individually and in small and large group settings. Students learn the art elements and principles, art criticism, the importance of both decorative and fine art historically (Prehistoric- Modern) and in modern life, and begin to develop, at each individual’s level, the necessary skills for visual expression and creativity. They will learn the skills of healthy art criticism that will translate into the individuals work as well as the rest of the class. All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

A fundamental art course based on the art elements and principles devoted to learning two and three dimensional design skills through basic drawing techniques (1st quarter) and basic ceramic techniques (2nd quarter). They will learn the skills of healthy art criticism that will translate into the individuals work as well as the rest of the class. Students are expected to known the vocabulary for both quarters. All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

 

409 GENERAL ART I: DRAWING I

The student will learn intermediate drawing techniques as well as Color Theory. They will learn large scale figure drawing, linear perspective, and still life drawing. Students are expected to research art history topics related to the class and complete simple design and drawing problems as homework. They will learn about famous drawing artists in which they will do an end of the semester report on that artist (depending on level). All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

Prerequisites: General Art I; Department Approval

The student will learn intermediate skills in design following in fashion or interior design. All of these techniques are applied in their sketching outside as well as in class. Study of famous fashion and interior designers is included. They are expected to have an end of the semester portfolio and with select work in which there will be a class and teacher evaluation. All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

 

419 ADVANCED ART I: PAINTING I/PRINTMAKING

The student will develop knowledge of painting techniques using oil paint and printmaking. There will be a study of famous painters throughout history. They are expected to have an end of the semester portfolio and with select work in which there will be a class and teacher evaluation. (Juniors may, with instructor’s approval, use Advanced I and II to prepare to take AP Portfolio Art). All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

 

423 ADVANCED ART II: PAINTING II

The student will develop further painting skills in mixed media, acrylic, watercolor, oil in large scale. Study of famous artists is included on the students preferred media. The student will learn intermediate ceramic techniques. They will learn coil method, slab method, advanced glazing techniques, and how the kiln works. They will learn art history topics related to the class. Students are expected to research an art period in which they will do an end of the semester research report (depending on level). All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

 

456 SPECIALIZED ART II: CERAMICS II

Prerequisites: Specialized Art I; Department Approval

½ CR.              3 LEVELS                   Jr./Sr.

The student will learn ceramic techniques at an advanced level. They will learn how to throw on the wheel, advanced sculpting methods, and how to manage all areas of ceramics, i.e. reclaim. Students are expected to research a famous ceramicists in which they will do an end of the semester report on this ceramicists as well as produce works of art inspired by that artist (with the approval of instructor). All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

 

469 SPECIALIZED ART III: CERAMICS III

Prerequisites: Specialized Art II; Department Approval

½ CR.              1 LEVEL                     Jr./Sr.

This independent study course is for the student who has excelled in Specialized II. The student will learn more advanced, large scale methods in sculpting and on the wheel. The student is expected to produce by the end of the semester 10-12 projects in which will be art criticized by instructor and students from Portfolio I and II. All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

 

466 PHOTOGRAPHY

This course introduces the student to the use of the camera, and the history of different types of cameras: still and digital. Students learn artistic methods of picture taking and take their own photos. Basic Photoshop techniques are taught in this course. Students must supply their own cameras and text book; the art department will supply photo paper for assignments. Study of the history of photography and famous photographers is included. All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

 

465 ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY

This course is for one who has excelled in Photography. The student will learn more advanced techniques on Photoshop. The student is expected to research a famous photographer in which they will do an end of the semester report on this photographer as well as produce works of art inspired by that artist (with the approval of instructor). Students must supply their own cameras and the art department will supply photo paper for assignments. All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

 

429 PORTFOLIO ART I* / 427 PORTFOLIO ART II*

Prerequisites: Advanced Art I & II; or Departmental Approval for both

In this most advanced art course, the student develops a portfolio of her work with the intention of applying for admission to a university level art program. The end of the semester portfolio must include 7-8 major works and several minor works that show the student’s individual artistic style and approach. This class may be taken for AP credit, with the instructor’s approval (see description for Advanced Art I and II), in which case the student must fulfill the more rigorous requirements for an AP portfolio, and submit the portfolio to the College Board for evaluation. All students will participate in the Art Show at the end of the semester.

 

491 AP PORTFOLIO ART*

Prerequisite: Department Approval

1 CR.               1 LEVEL                     Sr.

AP Portfolio Art is designed for the student who is seriously interested in the practical studio experience of art. This class is not based on a written exam, rather, a portfolio of approximately 24 works is submitted at the end of the school year for evaluation and possible college credit. This course encourages creative and systematic investigation of both art techniques and art concepts; in other words, in order to receive college credit you must create about 24 pieces of varying sizes that both look very good and communicate interesting ideas. There are three possibilities for portfolios: drawing (which includes painting), 2-D design (which includes photography) and 3-D design (which includes sculpture and ceramics). Art work done in semesters prior to the AP semesters MAY be considered for submission in the final AP portfolio, and it is highly desirable for students considering taking AP portfolio to take 3-4 art classes (and, if possible, extracurricular art classes) before enrolling in AP. Homework will be assigned for the summer prior to starting the AP class.
