501 FRENCH I

In this introductory course, students learn the basics of pronunciation and begin building their French vocabulary. Communication of basic ideas and observations is the overall goal and is developed through practice and repetition. Level 1 introduces the core components of French studies which are speaking, reading, writing, listening comprehension and culture. Students are introduced to the French and francophone cultures in order to gain awareness of cultures outside their own.

503 FRENCH II

1 CR.               2 LEVELS

The second year furthers the student’s ability to communicate in everyday situations in French and explore francophone culture. The student will demonstrate a stronger control in her communicative ability as the class advances onto more complex grammatical structures. Students will be able to converse in a more meaningful way through asking questions, expressing simple emotions and exchanging information with fellow learners. Realia, in addition to short written texts and language clips on familiar topics, will supplement the textbook and enhance the learner’s reading and listening comprehension.

This course emphasizes the acquisition of communicative skills while establishing a solid foundation in advanced grammar structures. Learners also expand their vocabulary through deeper reading, writing, speaking and listening. The students are invited to research and study culture, leading them to develop a fuller understanding and appreciation of the target language and culture. Presentations and in-class discussion will allow students to improve their oral communication and comprehension skills.

This course may be taken for 3 college credits from St. Louis University. Students register and pay the University at the beginning of the second semester.

X210 Intermediate French: Language and Culture

Prerequisites: Cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher; Department Approval

Through the research, study and discussion of culture, the students develop an understanding of French history as well as a deeper awareness of modern French attitudes and francophone cultures worldwide in comparison to their own. Continued practice through conversation, reading and writing will allow students to demonstrate self expression in the past, present and future time frames in a more refined manner. News articles, short novels and film will aid learners in developing critical thinking skills and expressing thoughts and opinions in the target language.

This course may be taken for 6 college credits from St. Louis University (3 credits for the first semester and 3 credits for the second semester). Students register and pay the University at the beginning of each semester.

513 SPANISH I

1 CR.               2 LEVELS

The emphasis in this course is on understanding spoken Spanish and on speaking Spanish. Students work together to understand each other and to practice speaking Spanish. Reading, writing, listening and speaking Spanish are skills that are developed throughout this course. Students will begin to explore the cultures of some of the many countries where Spanish is the official language.

CD’s and videos allow the students the opportunity to hear persons for whom Spanish is their primary language. The videos also allow the students to “travel” to Spanish countries. The online supports provide students with activities that they can pursue at their own pace. Students will choose a level at the beginning of the second semester.

515 SPANISH II

Prerequisite: Spanish I or its equivalent

1 CR.               3 LEVELS

This course continues the practice of speaking and listening to Spanish. Proficiency in speaking will improve. Reading and writing skills will be enhanced through greater practice.

Students will expand their grammar skills and add to their vocabulary. The online supports will continue to be in place for the student’s use. Students wishing to take Spanish III will be encouraged to level at advanced or honor.

Spanish III is designed to help you develop your ability to understand and speak everyday Spanish, to help you learn to read and write in Spanish, and to expand your working knowledge of the culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world. Classes are conducted in Spanish. Students are required to speak Spanish more than 90% of the time, including when they speak to classmates.

This course emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Hispanic Culture will be studied through music, readings, film, and class discussions. Students are expected to do more intensive work through the integration of tenses and vocabulary with speaking and writing. Students will intensively focus on verb acquisition for communicative purposes. More emphasis is placed on expressing full ideas through discourse in Spanish.

This course may be taken for 3 college credits from St. Louis University (3 credits second semester). Students register and pay the University at the beginning of the second semester.

Intermediate Spanish: Language and Culture

Prerequisites: Cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher; Department Approval

This course is designed to help you develop your ability to understand and speak everyday Spanish, to help you learn to read and write in Spanish, and help you learn more about the culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world, especially through the lens of current events and their background foundations. This is done through the application of Spanish grammar and vocabulary in reading, listening, conversation, oral presentations, and writing.

This course is communicative and conducted entirely in Spanish. There will be a review and expansion of key grammatical concepts, intensive vocabulary development, and extensive conversation practice. The course develops each student’s ability to narrate, describe, and express conditions, advice, requests and opinions and seeks to deepen awareness and appreciation of Hispanic cultures through readings, film, and class discussions. Students are expected to participate actively and fully each day. In order to do so, they must study the vocabulary and grammar.
