431 EXPLORING MUSIC

In this course, students will explore the history of music from prehistoric times through the modern age including topics such as popular music, and the music of other cultures. Students will develop listening skills and the ability to understand and discuss basic musical concepts. Credit is based on participation in class discussions, homework, quizzes/tests, and listening reports.

In this year-long course, students will learn the fundamentals of their chosen instrument. This course is designed to prepare students for membership in the instrumental ensembles available at SEA. Therefore, students are required to make a 2 YEAR COMMITMENT. In order to make adequate progress on their selected instrument, students are required to practice 100 min. per week (for example 20 min. 5X per week).

Students in Orchestra are chosen from String Orchestra and Concert Band after attaining a specific level of proficiency. Students enrolled in this course will advance their knowledge of music and playing technique through the study and performance of diverse orchestral repertoire. Students in this class will meet once per week as Orchestra, and once per week in String Orchestra or Concert Band. Credit is based upon regular attendance, practice, and participation in all scheduled performances. In order to make adequate progress on their selected instrument, students are required to practice 100 min. per week (for example 20 min. 5X per week). Students may sign up for an IPS (Independent Practice Session) which counts towards their 100 min. weekly requirement, and allows the students to work with an instructor to receive additional help.

448 JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Prerequisites: Department Approval

Students enrolled in this year-long course will advance their knowledge of jazz music and playing technique through the study and performance of standard and contemporary jazz repertoire. This course meets once per week after school. Credit is based upon regular attendance, practice, and participation in all scheduled performances.

461 CONCERT CHOIR

Prerequisite: Department Approval

Students enrolled in Concert Choir will learn about the fundamentals of vocal technique and the art of performing in an ensemble. Credit is based upon regular attendance, practice, and participation in all scheduled performances (e.g. Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, and any other scheduled performances). This class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:20 – 8:00 am for the full school year.

475 SELECT SINGERS

Prerequisite: Audition

The Select Singers are chosen from the Concert Choir by audition. Students enrolled in this course will advance their knowledge of vocal technique and the art of singing in an advanced ensemble through the study and performance of music encompassing a broad range of time periods and styles. Credit is based upon regular attendance, practice, and participation in all scheduled performances. This class meets Monday through Friday from 7:20 – 8:00 am.

453 MUSIC THEORY I

Students enrolled in Music Theory I will develop skills in music reading, musical analysis, and composition. Credit is based upon class participation, homework, quizzes/tests, and special projects.

489 STRING ORCHESTRA

Students are enrolled in String Orchestra after attaining a specific level of proficiency in Beginning Strings. Students enrolled in this course will advance their knowledge of music and playing technique through the study and performance of string orchestra repertoire in an ensemble setting. This class meets twice per week. Credit is based upon regular attendance, practice, and participation in all scheduled performances. In order to make adequate progress on their selected instrument, students are required to practice 100 min. per week (for example 20 min. 5X per week).
